Your Moving Day Prep Checklist

Moving day is an exciting, but often hectic, part of starting a new chapter. At Elite Movers, Inc., we know a little preparation can make a big difference.

Here is our ultimate checklist to help you be fully prepared when our crew arrives:

1. Put Together a Moving Essentials Bag

As you are packing up all your items in boxes, make sure to have toiletries, medications, a few changes of clothes, and chargers in a bag to keep with you. Once you arrive at your new place, you won't have to search for these items!

2. Ensure All Your Small Items Are Boxed Up

Our team can easily handle all your heavy furniture and large items. But make sure to pack all your small items in a box or crate sealed with a lid so that they stay safe when our movers load them on the truck.

Lightbulbs should be removed from lamps and packed accordingly, with shades in a separate box as well, so that damage is less likely to occur.

If you are moving liquids, the best way to transport those are upright in plastic totes so that spills will be less likely.

3. Label Everything Clearly

Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This makes unpacking much easier and helps us know exactly where to place each box in your new home. Color-coding by room (using colored tape or stickers) can add an extra layer of organization.

4. Take Inventory of High-Value Items

Make a list of valuable or fragile items before moving day. Take photos for documentation, just in case anything goes wrong. For added peace of mind, consider keeping these items with you, especially if they’re irreplaceable or hold sentimental value.

5. Make a Clear Pathway

Ensure that pathways to and from the moving truck are clear of obstacles. This not only saves time but also reduces the risk of tripping or damaging items. Clear any clutter in hallways or near doorways, move cars out of the driveway, and keep pets or kids out of the way for safety.

6. Prepare Appliances in Advance

If you’re moving appliances, make sure they’re ready to go. Defrost refrigerators at least 24 hours in advance, and secure all moving parts in washers and dryers. Disconnect and tape down any cords, so they don’t get in the way during transport.

Chest freezers should stay plugged in until right before they are put on the truck, if the moving distance is not over a day away. This will keep all your food frozen until you plug the freezer back in at your new home.

We recommend having a plumber or qualified individual disconnect water, gas, and electrical connections from appliances.

7. Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks

Moving day can be exhausting, so don’t forget to stay hydrated and take short breaks when you need them. Have a cooler stocked with water and some snacks nearby for a quick energy boost. You’ll feel better and stay more focused.

8. Disconnect Utilities

Don't forget to disconnect your utilities at your old address!

9. Communicate with Your Movers

Maintain open communication with us before and during the move. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Walk our through your home, point out any items that need special care, and share any specific instructions you have. At Elite Movers, we always appreciate clear communication, as it helps us deliver the best possible service.

10. Do a Final Walk-Through

Before leaving, conduct a final walk-through of your old home. Check closets, cabinets, and storage areas to ensure nothing gets left behind. This is your last chance to make sure every item, big or small, makes it to your new place.

With Elite Movers on your side, you can rely on experienced professionals to handle the heavy lifting, while you focus on settling into your new home.
